Sankofa's Mission:

The Westfield State University Sankofa Organization of diverse Faculty and Staff actively embraces a commitment to the expansion of the spirit of global diversity and multicultural principles.

The meaning of Sankofa and the Sankofa Bird symbolism:
The word and image of the Sankofa bird teaches us that we must go back to our roots in order to move forward. That is, we should reach back and gather the best of what our past has to teach us so that we can achieve our full potential as we move forward.

Visually and symbolically, Sankofa is expressed as a mythic bird that flies forward while looking backward with an egg (symbolizing the future) in its mouth. The symbolism translates to looking at your past experiences, and recognizing that these events shape your future.

Applications are due by April 15, 2019.

Scholarship Award:
A maximum of $750 may be awarded. - Funds can only  be used for travel

Scholarship Applications are accepted and awarded on a rolling basis

- Refer to scholarship criteria for eligibility requirements (see below).

- Recommendations are welcomed, but not required. Please send any recommendations to the Office of Diversity/Inclusion  in Ely 069

- Finalists will be contacted for interviews by e-mail or telephone.

Eligibility Criteria

- Meets all Short-term, study abroad, or National Student Exchange (NSE) course eligibility criteria.

- Undergraduate students who have demonstrated financial need according to FAFSA. Not sure if you qualify? Contact the International Programs Office by visiting westfield.ma.edu/academics/study-abroad

- Students must provide the Sankofa Travel Scholarship Committee and the International Programs office staff with a short presentation once they have returned from their experience. Those presentations will take place mid-September and early February.

- Students of diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply
